Choose the species before the furniture
Guinea pigs are ground-oriented prey animals; rats use complex vertical space; mice need secure, fine-barred housing and deep opportunities to investigate and burrow. “Small pet” is a retail aisle, not one husbandry plan.
Plan social housing responsibly
Guinea pigs, rats and mice have species-specific social needs. Sex, desexing, compatibility and individual health matter. Do not mix species simply because they are small. Seek an experienced veterinarian or reputable welfare guidance when forming groups.
Design for cleaning and replacement
Soft goods, litter areas, bowls and high-use platforms should be removable. Chewed, wet or contaminated items need prompt inspection and replacement. A product is not enrichment if it turns routine cleaning into an inaccessible job.
Use products to create choice
Useful purchases provide shelter, routes, foraging, comfort or safe novelty. Rotate some enrichment rather than packing every item into the enclosure at once. Keep clear movement areas and observe how the animals actually use each feature.
Common questions
Can guinea pigs and rabbits live together?
No. Australian RSPCA guidance advises against housing guinea pigs with rabbits because their needs and behaviour differ and rabbits can injure or transmit disease to guinea pigs.
Are all hammocks suitable for every small pet?
No. Size, fall risk, chewing, seams, attachment hardware and the animal’s mobility must be considered.
