Check the animal, water, obvious waste, uneaten food, equipment operation and unusual odour. Note temperatures and relevant humidity. Remove contamination promptly using tools reserved for that enclosure.
Weekly: inspect high-contact areas
Review bowls, hides, ledges, door tracks, seals, vents and the condition of substrate. Look for moisture trapped beneath décor, loose fixings, sharp damage, mould or pest activity. The exact interval should respond to the animal and setup.
Periodic: service the system
Clean sensor housings as their instructions allow, confirm probe placement, inspect lamp fittings and cables, clear vents and review consumable replacement dates. Test safety equipment after any significant rearrangement.
Choose products by material and pathogen
Follow manufacturer directions for concentration, contact time, rinsing and animal re-entry. A product being sold for animals does not mean it is compatible with every sealed backdrop, timber, metal, plastic or live-planted system. Never mix cleaning chemicals.
Document the non-routine event
Illness, parasites, flooding, escape, equipment failure or contamination may require a different cleaning and isolation plan. Ask a veterinarian about disease-specific disinfection rather than applying a generic schedule.

How often should I deep-clean a reptile enclosure?
There is no single interval. Species, substrate, enclosure type, waste load and health status matter. Daily observation and targeted cleaning are more useful than an arbitrary calendar reset.
Can I use household disinfectant?

Should I remove all substrate every week?
